CISA Flags Iran‑Linked Smear Campaign

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency has issued a warning about a potential smear campaign targeting President Trump. The campaign allegedly involves hackers associated with Iran planning to release about 100 gigabytes of purportedly stolen—but not yet verified—emails from Trump, his inner circle, and figures like Stormy Daniels. CISA labeled this a “calculated smear campaign” aimed at discrediting both Trump and other public officials.

Rising U.S.–Iran Cyber Tensions

This alert arrives amid growing strain in U.S.–Iran diplomatic relations, especially following coordinated U.S.–Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear sites in late June. A fragile ceasefire is in place, but Trump’s public claim that he “saved” Iran's Supreme Leader inflamed tensions, with Iranian clerics condemning the remarks. Despite suspended diplomatic talks, cybersecurity officials are increasingly warning of escalating cyber retaliation.

“Robert” Hacker Operative Revealed

According to Reuters, a hacker using the pseudonym “Robert” contacted media outlets, alerting them to the plan to publish Trump-related emails. This same account had previously leaked authentic campaign emails from Trump’s operation. U.S. authorities believe the actor is affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps .

Federal Investigation Underway

The FBI has taken charge of the investigation, emphasizing the serious nature of any breach affecting the president or his associates. FBI Director Kash Patel stated that national-security breaches will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted “to the fullest extent of the law”.

Implications for Diplomacy & Election Security

The timing of this campaign poses risks to ongoing diplomacy between the U.S. and Iran. Whether or not the leaks are confirmed, the threat amplifies geopolitical tensions tied to the recent ceasefire. Disinformation and cyber-espionage could influence public perception and further destabilize an already volatile region. U.S. agencies continue to warn of intensified cyber operations by Iran targeting both political figures and critical infrastructure .
